Hiring a moving company to transport your belongings from an old place to a new one sounds like a snap, but it can actually be a complicated process. Many first-time movers make the mistake of hiring the first Chicago movers they come across in online search results. The problem with this method is that it creates too much vulnerability for the consumer, namely not knowing whether or not a company is properly accredited or licensed to conduct relocation services. The moving industry is flooded with fly-by-night operations that prey on consumer ignorance and either perform shoddy service at a marked up price or don’t show up at all. Moving fraud has become such a widespread problem in the United States that the Federal Bureau of Transportation has begun publishing online literature about the warning signs would-be-movers should look for before signing a contract with a ‘professional’ firm.
Any company you hire should certainly be accredited by the Better Business Bureau and be licensed by both the state and federal government to run a commercial moving operation. This holds companies accountable if they are fraudulent or break the language in their customer contracts. Customer review sites for professional services like Angie’s List are also good because they offer independent perspectives from people that have already used a company’s services. Perhaps the best way to gauge a mover’s reliability, though, is to call up the company and ask the questions that are important to you. The quality of customer service is usually indicative of the company’s quality as a whole.
